Today
we see guy code all over the place, we see every day the differences between
men and women. In the article “Bros before Hos”: The Guy Code by Micheal Kimmel’s
we see the way guy code works and how guys think. In the article Kimmel explains
guy code he and how guys think they have to be tough, strong, emotionless. In
the article we see that guys feel pathetic or weak or maybe even gay if they don’t
hold these characteristics. In “Bros before Hoes” we also hear examples of why
guys feel they need to be this way, and what caused them to grow up like this.
What caused guys to feel like they need to be the tough ones and they have to
hold all emotions inside (Kimmel). This is very commonly seen in the
differences between guys and girls hockey.
So, why is it that guys are allowed to check in hockey
but girls are not? Does this seem fair? What is so different between guys and
girls that guys have the right to check and have that piece of violence when
girls cannot? I think a lot of this is because of the things that were said in
Kimmel’s article. It is more socially acceptable for guys to be tougher and to
be more violent. It is just known in guy code that guys have to show power to
be superior. So checking in men’s hockey is okay because when guys check they
are just trying to belittle the other team, and show their team as being the
best and being tough. But still why does that mean girls can’t check in hockey?
Then why are girls not allowed to check in hockey? Because
it is believed that many more young girls would be more willing to join the
sport of hockey if they are not frightened from the violence or the thought of
getting hurt (No Checking). A lady names Lynda Bari said “It's a cleaner game
and it's a nicer game. We are women and we don't have to copy the men, we can
make our own game” (No Checking). This proves that women do not want to play
the game like men do, they are not as willing to be hurt like the men, and just
do not have the desire to be violent like men’s hockey players. Checking has
been banned from girl’s hockey since 1990 (Total Female Hockey). During those
years when women could check in hockey it was believed that it caused more
women to play with their heads up and lowered the chance of injury. But today
it is believed that more girls would get hurt from checking because they do not
know how to protect themselves from body contact (Total Female Hockey). So basically
girls just do not have the desire or strength or mind to check like guys do.
They do not have the will and the desire. Guys want to show power while girls
just want to play the game.

I thought that this was a great article. You did a great job staying on the topic of "Bros before Hoes". You did a good job comparing women's vs. men's hockey.
ReplyDeleteI agree a lot with this post. It really brings up the fact that men usually have a lot more freedom in the way they get to do things in sports than women. I also agree in that what makes the men get to be so high up in the sport world. We all should be treated equally. I found it interesting that the women recently have been getting more hurt because they don't know how to protect themselves. So that brings up the question should they just allow it? Very cool point of view on this post--great job!

I think you asked some really good questions on the differences between male and female hockey. It's funny how you basically say women are more emotional than men. I think it's true. haha
